Received my copy on Tuesday September 8th and was able to play it for all of about 10 minutes then got “disc unreadable” error.

Quick search on internet tells me this is known issue and many other people are experiencing same problem. So I had to pack everything back up in the box to try & exchange for better copy from Amazon.

Also worth noting as other person here has mentioned that Amazon didn’t include a receipt for this purchase with this box which makes it difficult at best to send in for free GH: Van Halen game.

Want my advice? don’t buy this game from Amazon… buy it from local store where you can (a) easily exchange it if you get a bad copy & (b) get a receipt!

Best of luck to those buying this product here. Caveat Emptor!

Too much has changed in Guitar Hero 5 compared to the other Guitar Hero games. The system of earning money from gigs to buy new guitar, outfits, and songs is gone. In order to unlock things in this game you have to do challenges. For example, a song may tell you to play with the guitar and get a 200 note streak to complete the challenge, or play with bass and use all upstrokes to complete the challenge. There are no unlockable songs. The songs on the main setlist are the only ones that you can play. Of course there is the downloadable content on Xbox live, but the song list is still very short. The songs themselves while being a decent mix of time periods and influences, are not very fun to play on the whole. There are maybe 10 songs on the game that I actually look forward to playing. The other songs are just not fun. Steer away from this release and wait for Guitar Hero: Van Halen. The best part of buying Guitar Hero 5 was the I got GH:VH for free and before it comes out. Guitar Hero: Van Halen is fantastic, Guitar Hero 5 is boring and strange.

First some background… This is my first purchase of the Guitar Hero/Rock Band genre. I’ve played here and there, not not hard core. I am a musician and adult gamer. (Xbox360)

First, I’ve played probably about 2 hours and have had 2 system crashes with the game. Also the very first song I tried, at one point the fretboard and the audio hiccuped an got VERY out of sync. Like 5 seconds+ or so. Unacceptable.

Lag adjustment – the calibration seems pretty straightforward in setup (as it should be.) But then I go into the game, and it’s still not quite right. I have very good reflexes and an extremely good ear, so this is not user error.

There doesn’t seem to be anything groundbreaking about this title. There are probably nuances that are improved, but like I said this is my first. Same old game from my perspective.

I’m not entirely happy with the song list. There are lots of cool songs yes, but IMO there are a lot of songs/artists that I’ve never even heard of. If you’re going to go more extreme, do that in a song pack not the core game. Stick to more well known material for the core release.

The controller (wireless) seems solid and well built. Mine had a cosmetic scratch on the pad (upper frets) but not worth sending back.

Being my first, coupled with the VH offer, definitely glad I purchased.

for the start i got this on a 360 and was playing from the disk on a new jasper 512MB

i had the game and i started it and found that i sucked. It turned out that i wasnt bad (i had gh2/3/4 and rockband1/2 on the ps2, so i knew the old ones), but instead the 360 cant play the game in 1080p without lag part way through the track or atleast cant do 1080p from the disk. playing on 720p and 480i were both fine but i find it unacceptable that i cant play a rhythm game in 1080p.

game play wise its the same as 4 but with a a different track list, not as good as rock band or rock band 2 in the track list and a couple of the more popish songs have bad note tables.

the guitar is the best so far, getting the guitar from this (the band hero/GH5 guitar) is worth getting even if u dont want the game all that much.
